The view from the fire tower on Overlook Mountain
I came home for fall break on Wednesday the 15th. The OCS girls xc team won MHALS that day (congratulations!). I would have liked to see it, but I kinda feel like skipping school would have been screaming downward spiral. I'm a loser. I HAVE to go to my classes. Right, so that weekend was the perfect opportunity to do something interesting as far as woods wandering was concerned. We didn't have a ton of time. Steph had never been to Overlook. While it seemed kind of dull and typical, we went anyway. When we got there, we had some kind of weird, random insight which told us that it would be a fantastic idea to run instead of walk. Personally, I think she was still pumped from MHALS. I must have had a temporary lapse of judgement... I honestly don't know... but regardless, we decided to run up the mountain. At this point, I should explain that it's um... a continuous uphill climb for 2 1/2 miles. We thought it was only 1 1/2. By the time we realized this wasn't the case, we'd already gone 2 miles. The way I saw it- if I didn't make it up this time, I'd want to do it again. Why run up it twice when I only had to do it this once? Steph was too far ahead to communicate this revellation, but apparently she had the same thought. She'd had a cold for the past week. I was getting one. We DID make it, but we probably coughed up lungs afterwards and froze to death at the top of the mountain. The view's worth it, of course. Needless to say, I was not allowed to run in the Taco Juan 5k the next day- something about getting sick. PHHH!! The fact that I lost my voice for 4 days after that fantastic experience and got hammered with a fantastic cold probably served me right. But hey- how many people can say they ran up Overlook Mountain?! Steph- we rock!! What's next? Slide Mountain? We'll see....
